Chapter 15

On the way back to Gavin Harris’s home, I filled Jimmy in on the details we knew of my father’s disappearance. Admittedly, it wasn’t much, but it was a start. By the time I finished, we tabled the discussion to focus on our visit with Gavin’s wife.

I knocked on the door. It was opened a minute later by Mrs. Harris with her daughter on her hip. Mrs. Harris looked tired. Almost comatose.

“Detectives,” she said. “Have you found out information on the man who killed Gavin?”

I noted her use of the word “man” in conjunction with the killer. It begged the question if she was using it as a general placeholder for the unknown, or if she was purposefully trying to lead us away from the possibility of a woman as the killer.

“Do you mind if we come in for a few minutes?” I asked.

“Of course not,” she said. “I apologize for our appearances. We haven’t had much energy to get dressed in real clothes, much less leave the house. Mascara is useless since I cry at least once an hour.”

“We won’t take up much of your time.”

Mrs. Harris led us into the kitchen this time, a compact, bright space with robin’s-egg-blue walls and a coastal vibe with white trimmings and a cozy breakfast nook. She set Addy in a highchair and absentmindedly gave her a few crackers that seemed to occupy the toddler’s attention.

“Thanks for having us back,” I said. “I know this is a difficult time for you.”

“I didn’t know you were coming,” she said, looking up at me. “Did you find information about Gavin’s killer?”

“We’re working on it,” I said. “Unfortunately, I can’t get too into the details of our progress as it’s an active investigation.”

“Sorry, then why are you here?”

“I need to ask you a few more questions.”

“Oh, okay. Sure.”

“Do you know if Gavin might have had a second phone?” I asked. “Maybe a work phone or something?”

“I don’t think he had a work phone.” Mrs. Harris stood and grabbed a box of Cheerios from the cupboard even though her daughter was still busy with the crackers on her tray. She poured a few into her hand. “At least not one that I knew of.”

“What about a second personal phone?”

“Why are you asking this?” She deflected again. “Did you find out something? Was Gavin having an affair?”

“I don’t know; you tell us,” I said. “Did you suspect something?”

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Mrs. Harris, why didn’t you tell us you confronted your husband at work?”

Her face paled a few degrees. “That was a personal, marital matter. It’s not relevant to the investigation.”

“You had a huge argument with your husband in front of his colleagues a week or two before he was killed,” I said. “You don’t think that’s relevant?”

“You can’t possibly think I killed Gavin.” Mrs. Harris’s eyes were wild as she glanced between us. “There’s no way. I loved Gavin. That’s why I confronted him.”

“We’ve got eyewitnesses—”

“Yes, I argued with him,” she said. “I’m not denying that.
